Ground beetles natures natural pest control
16/7/2018
Introducing two of natures natural pest controllers. The Ground Beetle (Carabidae) and Rove Beetle (Staphylinidae).
While some people may find these guys a little scary, ground beetles are in fact a gardener's best friend. When it comes to pest control, ground beetles are an excellent first line of defence in the protection of plants, shrubs and flowers in your garden. Adult beetles and their larvae are prolific predators, feeding on insects, slugs and other invertebrates found in gardens right across the UK.
You can encourage these beetles into your garden by providing habitats for wildlife - particularly wood piles, compost heaps and leaving some leaf litter in gardens' borders. They are most active during March and October and are usually found in the soil, however, they will climb to eat aphids and caterpillars from their leaves.
