The best way to keep your house pest free

24/9/2018

The warm weather sparks a rise in the number of insects, spiders and rats entering our homes and gardens. And our dry, safe, food-rich homes make the ideal environment for these pesky bugs.

There are a number of ways in which you can prevent these pests from making your home, their home:

  1. Keep your kitchen clean. This includes cupboards, underneath cabinets, floors and drainage pipes. Cockroaches, slugs, flour moths, ants and rodents are attracted into your home by food debris, so clearing away any potential food sources is a must for a pest-free home.

  2. Remove and treat damp.  Insects such as cockroaches will move inside to find humid, warm places to hid over winter. Good ventilation is really important for preventing insect breeding grounds, and If you see a cigar-shaped, grey, wingless insect crawling around, you may have a more serious damp problem. Silverfish are harmless, but they’re key indicators of damp in a home.

  3. Block up cracks.  Slugs and cockroaches like to hide in dark, damp cracks during the day, and enter your home at night. Sealing cracks around windows and doors will stop these little bugs from getting into your home.  We would also advise you to cover up plug holes when not in use, to prevent unwanted pests crawling in the water pipes.

  4. Nature's natural pest controllers. Spiders are a vital part of our ecosystem, without them we would be overrun by flies and insects as they hunt and eat thousands of these pests every year. They are not specific with what they eat and therefore can help control most flies and insects from coming into your home.

  5. Regularly treat pests for fleas. Cats and dogs can easily pick up fleas and bring them into your home.  Fleas bites on humans can be horrid and very itchy and in some cases cause eczema.  Shake out and wash your pet bedding once a fortnight, and vacuum areas used by pets with a strong suction vacuum cleaner. If you see fleas on the carpet or furniture, spray them with household Flea Spray.
When to call the experts? One or two bugs around the home are manageable but if you’re worried you’ve got an infestation, it’s best to call an expert at DRE Pest Control to help you out.
